Two years ago, I often couldn't fall asleep at night. Luckily this is no longer a problem, only once in a while. But when I had trouble sleeping, I came up with some methods, so that I would actually get some sleep. So now, when I can't fall asleep at night, I usually do one of these three things:
a) I get out of bed, put on a sweater and open up my window. The nightwind and the stars really help. It's actually even better if there are no stars, but rain instead - I LOVE rain, and the rhythmic sound it makes is so relaxing.
b) I go downstairs, make a cup of lavender Tea - lavender makes you sleepy. I bring it upstairs, go into bed, with the Tea and a book. After 20 minutes, it's hard to keep my eyes open.
c) This is purhaps the one that works the best. When I can't fall asleep, I turn on my iPod and connect it with my speakers. I've made the most incredible playlist, it works like a charm. Sometimes I put it on, even when I'm tired and very able to fall asleep, but this playlist makes me sleep like a baby. It makes me dream the most amazing dreams. The only bad thing is that it is almost impossible to get up next morning, because you have had such a great night of sleep, and want to keep on sleeping.
Here is my magical playlist "Slow night so long":
